Marshall County
Marshall County is located in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia
and was named for John Marshall, chief justice of the U.S. Supreme
Court. The county is in the Wheeling metro area. The estimated
population in 2004 was 34,722. Its county seat is Moundsville. Its
southern border is the Mason-Dixon line.
Marshall County is home to the
largest conical burial mound in North America, in Moundsville. Marshall
County was formed in 1835 from Ohio County by act of the Virginia
Assembly. The West Virginia State Penitentiary, built in 1866, was
located here. After closing in 1995, it is now open for tours. Glen
Dale, WV in Marshall County is the hometown of country music star Brad
Paisley.
