Early History
Colonel Ebenezer Zane founded the town of Wheeling back in 1769. It was officially established in 1795 and incorporated in 1836. During the Civil War, Wheeling remained loyal to the Federal Government. This led to the creation of the State of West Virginia, which was admitted to the union on June 20th, 1863.
